Search Engines
  • AJKids (Ask Jeeves Kids) - be sure to turn on the Adult filters in Preferences!!
  • ALFY - includes "educational activities" in music, more as well as monitored links to kid-safe activities - media rich site that could easily be an early learning homepage for introductory computer instruction
  • AltaVista - access Settings, then change family filter options - as a parent or teacher, you can set a password here that will filter all searches - be sure to Save settings, then set AltaVista as the home page
  • Dib Dab Doo and Dilly Too - will appeal to younger students - scroll down for a few interactive games
  • Google - access Preferences and turn on the SafeSurf options - be sure to Save Settings
  • KidsClick! - kid friendly, guaranteed resources for teachers and librarians
  • KidsGoGoGo - client-side search control inexpensively - filters out adult content sites
  • Kid's Tools for Searching the Internet - multiple search engines on one page - many different from the above
  • gold star siteTek Mom's Search Tools for Kids - another multiple search page - includes academic subject searching and an image search
  • Yahooligans! - friendly, safe - good image and media library

Bibliographic Citation - These citation tools make it easier for students to cite sources, but they can not MAKE students cite sources. Teachers and Librarians need to guide this - it needs to become a habit.

AUP - Acceptable Use Policies - Every school with technology must have a policy outlining acceptable use of the hardware, software, network and network services (email, internet, intranet). This must include not only guidelines but also consequences for violation.
