Wabanaki Studies > Wabanaki Lessons

corn imageEcology and Economy

Students will explore the interrelationship of Wabanaki ecology, economy and culture in two lessons. The first requires them to read an historical overview by a Maine archaeologist. The reading discusses resources and how the arrival of the Europeans changed Wabanaki economy and the ecology of the tribal lands. The second lesson is a study of an oral history describing Penobscot seasonal migration. The lesson asks students to reflect on the use of the land and resources and upon how this has changed. It is recommended that these lessons be used with a study of Wabanaki Worldview and after a lesson on Mapping the Wabanakis.
