dawnThe Four Cards

A Simulation for Wabanaki Studies in the Middle School

This simulation is based upon an activity called The Four Slips. Its original intent was to inform and sensitize students and adults to the bias and racism - and resulting actions - that indigenous populations faced after colonization. The activity has been adopted to the experiences of the Wabanakis following Contact. Events include: contact, early trade agreements, plague, war, settlements, relocation and reservations, Indian schools, economic stress.

Teachers should not undertake this activity without a full and complete understanding of its process and the related history.

In my experience, The Four Cards is a highly emotional experience for students. For this reason, I recommend that it be done in a safe classroom setting, not in a larger group. It is designed for a 70 minute class, at the 7th or 8th grade level (or older). It can be an introductory activity for Wabanaki studies, or a summative activity.
