Powerful Words in a slideshow

These Powerful Words express prejudice and stereotype.

For almost 400 years the Wabanakis have been negatively described with these and other powerful words in journals, proclamations and texts written by non-Natives. You are about to read selections from three representative documents. The first is by Samuel de Champlain, a French explorer and cartographer who recorded in a detailed Journal his meetings with the Penobscot in 1604. The second is a Proclamation written at the command of Spencer Phips, Lieutenant Governor (and Acting Governor) of the Province of Massachusetts Colony, 1755. The third is a passage from a 1904 American history textbook written by William Henry Elson.

Read the documents carefully. Discuss them with your classmates. You must understand the words and the attitudes of the writers before you can respond to them.  You may want to refer to the Vocabulary list as you read.
