  1. aspiration - strong desire, ambition
  2. assumption - something taken for granted or accepted as true without proof
  3. barbarian - a member of a group or people considered by those of another nation or people to have a primitive civilization - often it implies a cruel or fierce nature
  4. capacity for - potential for, ability to do something
  5. cartographer - maker of maps or charts
  6. civilization - in general, the type of society or culture developed; often means " 1. An advanced state of intellectual, cultural, and material development in human society, marked by progress in the arts and sciences, the extensive use of record-keeping, including writing, and the appearance of complex political and social institutions."  (dictionary.com)
  7. conscienceless - without a sense of the moral (right & wrong) effects of one's actions
  8. contrary to - opposite to or opposed to
  9. cultivate - to improve the land by plowing, fertilizing, etc.
  10. defraud - to cheat or swindle (usually involves money)
  11. discriminate - to tell the difference between to things; to make sensible/wise decisions
  12. dwell - to live in
  13. embroiled - involved in an argument or hostile action
  14. indigenous - originating or living "first" in an area or environment
  15. inhabit - live in
  16. laying up - storing, putting away for future use
  17. obligations - responsibilities, duties; promise that you must follow because of an agreement
  18. perpetual - lasting for an unlimited time
  19. perfidious - treacherous (stealing, for example, from a partner that is motivated by greed)
  20. preconception - an opinion formed before full understanding or knowledge is gained; a prejudice
  21. pound (£) - basic money of the Massachusetts Colony (like our dollar) - 10£ in 1775 would be the equivalent of about $862.00 today.
  22. reservation - "A tract of land set apart by the federal government for a special purpose, especially one for the use of a Native American people." (dictionary.com)
  23. savage - wild, not civilized (from the Old French: "in the woods")
  24. scalp - the skin (and hair) covering the top of our heads
  25. scarcity - shortage, small supply
  26. Sieur de Monts - a fur trading merchant who was given, by the King of France, exclusive rights to establish French colonies in what is now Maine and Canada (as well as to take as much fur as possible)
  27. sovereignty - independence and self-government, freedom from external control
  28. solemn - serious, "dignified and somber in manner or character and committed to keeping promises" (dictionary.com)
  29. submission - giving in to the power of another
  30. treaty - "A formal agreement between two or more states, as in reference to terms of peace or trade" (dictionary.com)
  31. wampum - "Small cylindrical beads made from polished shells and fashioned into strings or belts, formerly used by certain Native American peoples as currency and jewelry or for ceremonial exchanges between groups" (dictionary.com)
  32. wigwam - Native American dwelling - there were several types of wigwam
