Creating a Character Chart

You will be creating a document which will contain a chart of the characters in the novel and specific information about each. To do this, follow the steps below:

1. Open Microsoft Word - Blank Document.
2. Center your cursor.
3. Enter the following heading:
Dragonwings Character Chart.
4. Press Enter  - and then select Table - Insert Table.
5. You will create a table which is 20 rows by 6 columns.
6. Click into the first cell and enter -
NameThen enter the following column headings in the
next 5 cells across the top:
Physical Traits, Character Traits, Objects Associated, Relation to Dreamweaver, Important Actions. You can format the text, but you will not get extra credit for the appearance of the chart.
6. Save the chart in your Dragonwings folder as:
Yourname_DWchart.doc

 

Essay Topics

1. Family  -  What are the families? What important role does each play in the novel?  You must find your own theme statement. You may extend your essay by adding a paragraph about your own family.

2. Pride - What major characters (at least 3) are proud and what role does that pride play in the novel? You must find your own theme statement. You may extend your essay by discussing pride in either Icarus or The Flying Machine.

3. Greed - How does greed direct much of the decision-making in this book? You must find your own theme statement, but you should either agree or disagree with the point of view you find in the book.

4. Materialism (a primary concern with money and material things) - How does materialism motivate  many of the actions  in this book? You must find your own theme statement, but you should either agree or disagree with the point of view you find in the book.

5. Human Spirit - the human spirit can be defined as those traits which all human beings have in common. Define 3 of these traits as they appear in the novel and discuss the importance of each.

6. Freedom - what are the elements of freedom which appear in the novel? Which characters represent these?  How is freedom limited? How can it be exercised? You must find your own theme statement.

7. Growing Up is learning to act independently - what actions did Moon Shadow take in the novel which helped him to grow up?  What decision was involved in each? You must find at least 4 important actions, and build a paragraph about each.   You should develop your own theme statement.

8. Dragonness - what are the elements of dragonness which Windrider discovers? Follow them in the order they appear in the novel and discuss how each helps him to grow as a human being. You must develop a theme statement.
