Keyboarding - Keyboarding is clearly an essential skill for today's digital student. We believe that it belongs in a late elementary / early middle school curriculum (4th-5th grade) but not as a replacement for technology literacy instruction. Keyboarding must, to be successful, include practice outside of school, keyboarded assignments, and chat or email access. The following online sites can supplement keyboarding software, or even replace it.

- !Quick Screen Capture - lowcost PC screen capture and image editing software - capture image instantly for annotation - wonderful tool when used with an LCD (this will allow a classroom to annotate the same image/map/chart multiple times!)

- QuickMind - from Sunburst, a client-based system that, via a web-based interface, allows students and teachers and administrators to create web content quickly and easily - classroom or site licensing
WebWorksheet Wizard - free posting of worksheet web page - connected to TrackStar - worksheets can be accessed by anyone, but only edited by creator - students can be provided with a Quick ID for access - can intertwine with Tracks, QuizStar quizzes and RubiStar rubrics for a neat unit presentation - students can respond to assignments by created a web page that is hosted for a month for free (one image, links, and text that is reviewed by editors) - in our experience, it is a bit confused by simulaneous and high traffic, so best to create in "off hours."
Posting Photos, Saving/Sharing Files Online
- Fotki - free online sharing - password protect your albums and make them private - I don't think you would want students to be able to freely view the Community
- ofoto - Kodak's online photo sharing, storing and printing space - basic account is free - software for Windows is available or use online form (just like Snapfish form) - editing, effects and border tools - system works very smoothly - print ordering is an option
- phlog - this is "mobile phone blogging", but you do not need a picture-taking mobile phone - e-mail your digital photos to the free blog for instant uploading! 240k size limit
- Smugmug - fee-based service that allows you to upload larger image files - free trial available - powerusers can upload video clips and replace the Smugmug header with their own - you have a great deal of control over who views the photos and how they are viewed - URL linking to specific images - gifts (mugs, shirts, albums) can be ordered - $30/yr basic to $100 for pro
- Snapfish - free upload of photos, with the goal of purchasing prints - some editing tools included - the free borders are a nice addition - you can restrict download and copying, create albums and e-mail parents or group members notice of new images - there is a Comments feature too! -gifts (mugs, shirts, albums) can be ordered - free photoediting software for Windows machines
- Village Photos - store up to 25 images, to which you can link for purposes of making an activity - free registration - there is an excellent FAQ section, with links to many extended How-To's (including good descriptions of image size and resolution) - fee-based accounts have many other features - images can be titled and captioned and viewed in a gallery - with the basic plan, you can not link to an image to use it in .html or a blog - You have the option of compressing images upon upload, useful if you are a novice, do not have a imaging program, or are using scanned images. You can also rotate images once uploaded.
- Yahoo Briefcase - requires a Yahoo ID (free registration) and is included if you have already created a group - images and files can be uploaded - public sharing requires premium service, but you can share files with anyone who has a Yahoo ID. - 30mb of storage is free - images can be e-mailed to users - you can send people to the long URL given for the image.
- YourImageHost - free hosting of 5mb worth of images - portfolio, gallery or slideshow format - you are provided not only with a link to the stored image, but with the .html code to include it (as shown) in a blog or web page. The portfolio provides you with a link to a web page on which images are displayed. The gallery provides you with thumbnails which will expand. You have the option of compressing images upon upload, useful if you are a novice, do not have an imaging program, or are using scanned images.
Bookmark Managers - these sites will enable you to save, and share, your bookmarks via a free website
- BaBoo - in addition to bookmarks, you get a calendar, message board, members mail (for a group), and an online Address Book - a bit uneven in performance
- BackFlip - selected as a top website by PC Magazine - fussy homepage, but your page is clean
- iKeepBookmarks - easy to use - the standard
- LINKY - somewhat silly in interface but kids will see it as kool
- .Mac account - bookmark keeping, and synchronization with Safari, as part of this resource for Macintosh users - yearly fee of $99
