A Note About Creating and Using a Rubric
Assessments are effective only if students understand the criteria, the system, and the vocabulary. We suggest that the teacher follow this process when using rubric assessment:
- Develop the draft rubric based upon a completed project plan, including a calendar.
- Introduce the draft rubric to the students along with the project. Allow students to rewrite the language of assessment so that it is clearly understood by all.
- Break a large rubric into smaller segments so that students are guided and not overwhelmed.
- Use the rubric in determining a final assessment, whether it be a letter, a number, a percent, or a written evaluation. Share the print or digital rubric evaluation with the student.
