Beyond Word Processing
Word and PowerPoint in the English Classroom
This 1-day workshop focuses upon the applications of Word and PowerPoint to the English classroom. We begin with a look at features of Word that facilitate correction, editing and assignment preparation. Participants will follow along with demonstrations, working from provided document files. Specific topics will include:
- The Reviewing Toolbar
- Comments
- Other ways to "correct and comment"
- Tables
- Lists and Outlines
- Save as Web Page
- Images
- Pagination
- Indexing and Table of Contents
- Styles
- Text boxes, Frames, and Linked Text
- Macros - keystroke shortcuts for editing
- Scanning text - OCR and digitizing - requires availability of a scanner with OCR software (contact us for recommendations)
A second morning session presents uses of PowerPoint in the English classroom. The presentation file will be made available to participants. The session closes with a discussion of the design of a PowerPoint activity or project. The following are illustrated:
- Poetry - creative, imitative, recorded, analyzed, scanned
- Journals
- Electronic portfolios
- Paraphrasing Shakespeare
- Textual commentary and analysis
- Grammar - sentence analysis, parts of speech, parsing
- Vocabulary building
- Hyperfiction
- Digital Storytelling
The afternoon session is devoted to the creation of materials or templates for immediate use in the classroom. Least Tern will, if needed, host web and other files for the remainer of the school year. Skills instruction in both applications is available to individuals or groups.
"Break out sessions" will focus upon:
- Peer editing - best practices
- Locating resources online - search strategies, Least Tern resources
- Integration of Word and PowerPoint with Inspiration
- Copyright reminders
