But not Least...III - blog about blogging and other free tools

Point your aggregator to http://leasttern.blogdrive.com/index.xml to receive updates on our blog, But not Least...III, which explores our ongoing activities to explore useful educational technologies and methodologies through doing. We have begun to use a free photo blog, Phlog, to post images. There is a discussion (April 5, 2004) about how to do this.

To include our But not Least.... RSS feed on your blog or site you can point your aggregator to http://www.leasttern.com/feed.xml or paste the following directly into the <body> of your blog (generally a side column) or web page where you want the feed to appear (produces the framed feeds I have displayed below):

To change the appearance of either feed, go to Feedroll (http://www.feedroll.com/rssviewer/) and enter this URL into the "Your own URL" field:

http://www.leasttern.com/feed.xml

Change the style indicators (scroll down a little) and click "update".  Copy the generated JavaScript code and add it to your page.

Ideas about Using feeds

We offer this from what we have learned. You will also find these ideas, and further learning, archived at But not Least...III. (private) and But not Least...II (public)

  1. Think of your content first. Strategic design and entry improves your feed (we failed here).  For example, when using a blog as the feed source, be sure to make the heading/title and the first paragraph of text descriptive and short.
  2. If you are using Feedroll to create and distribute your RSS, as we mention above and recommend for beginners, be sure to go to Feedroll and update your feed every time you upload a new .xml document.
  3. Be sure to upload .xml files as text.
  4. Feedroll updates hourly - don't panic if your updates don't appear - just come back 31 minutes later. Or, if you have an aggregator (see below) on your desktop, you can check it for the update, which should be fairly instant.
  5. I create my .xml in Dreamweaver, starting with a new .xml document. You can also make this document in any text editor. Save it as .xml.  View my .xml by clicking on the xml icon icon here or attached to any feed. I have learned about .xml content by copying code from other feeds.
  6. Safari does not display .xml correctly. That's a pain.

I have posted feeds for 3 newspapers on our History Resources page - this is something I would suggest educationally. You can put subject-appropriate feeds (if you can find them) on your assignment sheets!!

You can find out about RSS and Atom from the Blogger.com site.  Here is a link to the XML generated by Blogger in Atom for But not Least... II

Here is a screen shot of my current aggregator, NetNewsWireLite (OSX Jaguar +  scrolldown the page to find the download). You can see why it is an attractive choice for someone who wants to keep up with a few blogs or feeds:
